Makeup For Oily Skin: Best Products + Tips for Natural Matte Skin
- This is for my oily & combo skin beauties.
In this post:
ToggleFor some, summer is the perfect time to skip makeup all together and let the natural beauty shine.
For the rest of us, wearing makeup throughout the summer means constantly straddling the line between shiny and glowing.
Oily skin beauties struggle with “the shine” all year long, not just in the summer. *sigh*
So, how can we keep our beautiful skin looking naturally matte but not flat all year long?
Here’s a list of products that keep the shine away every day!
Best Moisturizers For Oily Skin
Cream based Moisturizers work really well for dry cold winters, but its not the best option for oily skin, particularly in the summer.
Instead go for a gel based moisturizer, or a matte moisturizer that will give you the hydration, but won’t leave your skin overly greasy.
Best Moisturizers for Oily skin:
- La Roche-Posay – Toleriane Matte Face Moisturizer ($25)
- Formula 10.0.6 – Seriously Shine Free Mattifying Oil Free Moisturizer ($7.99)
- Cetaphil – Pro Oil Absorbing Moisturizer With Spf 30 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen ($14)
Best Makeup Primers For Oily Skin
The key to keeping your skin matte and makeup looking fresh all day really starts with primer.
It will help your makeup look flawless (i.e fill fine lines and wrinkles etc.) and start your makeup routine with a no-shine base, which is essential for hot days.
Best Primers for Oily Skin:
- Covergirl – TruBlend Base Business Primer, Mattifying ($8.49)
- Smashbox – The Original Photo Finish Smooth & Blur Primer ($37)
- Ulta Beauty – Matte Face Primer ($18)
Best Foundations For Oily Skin
Many companies sell matte (for combination/oily skin type) foundations, but some of the best come from drugstore brands.
A matte foundation is your second defense against shine throughout the day, after primer.
Best Foundations for Oily Skin:
- NARS Cosmetics – Soft Matte Complete Foundation ($42)
- NYX Cosmetics – Can’t Stop Won’t Stop Foundation ($15)
- Maybelline – Super Stay Full Coverage Foundation ($13.99)
- Maybelline – Fit Me Matte + Poreless Liquid Foundation ($10.99)
Best Setting Powders For Oily Skin
You don’t have to “bake” (ie. Where you keep it on your face for a few minutes) with loose setting powder to keep your makeup matte all day long.
Simply apply the powder with wherever you get the most oily throughout the day, or lightly apply all over your face.
Best Setting Powder for Oily Skin:
- Dermablend – Loose Setting Powder ($32)
- Fenty Beauty – Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Setting Powder ($36)
- Maybelline – Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder ($10.99)
- Laura Mercier – Translucent Loose Setting Powder ($47)
Best Setting Sprays For Oily Skin
You’ve worked hard on your makeup, now its time to seal it all in.
Drugstore brands have stepped it up with setting sprays!
The best products are not only long wearing (some wear up to 16 hours) but they can also be used as a primer spray or refreshing spray.
A triple threat!
Best Setting Spray for Oily Skin:
- Milani – Make It Last Setting Spray Prime + Correct + Set ($10.99)
- Urban Decay – All Nighter Setting Spray ($36)
- NYX Cosmetics – Matte Setting Spray ($9.99)
- Maybelline – Lasting Fix Makeup Setting Spray ($9.99)
How To Keep Your Makeup Matte All Day
A well stocked makeup bag is your best friend in the summer heat.
I always keep a mini setting spray, small powder brush, pressed powder compact, and oil blotting sheets in my makeup bag.
Best Makeup Bag Products for Oily Skin:
- Rare Beauty – Blot & Glow Touch-Up Kit ($26)
- NYX Cosmetics – Mini Matte Setting Spray ($4)
- Morphe – Rosé Away 6-Piece Travel Brush Set ($28)
- Beauty Bakerie – Parchment Paper Oil Blotting Sheets ($12)

Hi Sarah, Thank you for commenting. Im so glad you found this post helpful. I havent tried the Giorgio Armani Power Fabric Foundation but Ive heard great things about their other foundations!
Powder before a foundation is a really cool tip that I’d never thought of doing before. I have oily skin and I find it really hard to keep it under control at times so this post has been fab for me to read. Also, I’ve heard great things about the Formula moisturiser, so I’ll have to check it out now you’ve mentioned it too. If you’ve not tried the Giorgio Armani Power Fabric foundation, then that could be worth looking at. I’ve found it really helpful for controlling my oily skin and it doesn’t sit heavily on your face at all, even though it’s full coverage. Thank you for sharing this post x
It’s getting easier and easier to find the right products for oily skin. Thanks for the great read!
