Inexpensive and “cutesy” is hard to pass up, but does the ELF Cosmetics Hydrating Core Lip Shine really do anything? I’m not so sure and I’ll tell you why.
ELF describes Hydrating Core Lip Shine as a “melting lip balm with heart shaped core that moisturizes lips while adding a sheer tint of color”.

Hydrating Core Lip Shine in Happy Quick Review
Tinted lip balms used to be boring, but recently beauty brands have embraced the “your lips but better” product.
The “lip shine” does a great job at adding that “sheer tint of color”. Just what you need as you run out the door, or as an added boost to your fading lipstick throughout the day.
However, the balm part of this product isn’t impressive.
It does provide some moisture, but not as much as I was expecting.
The moisture level is on par with non-glossy chapsticks that are typically marketed towards men, if you get what I mean.
Also, the scent of Core Lip Shine is weird. It smells like modeling clay to me.
Not the most offensive scent, but not the most pleasant.
ELF Cosmetics offers other products, like the Sheer Slick Lipstick that does a better job at moisturizing than this balm.
You will love this product if:
- Want a sheer wash of color
- Product smell isn’t a factor
You might not like this product if:
- Scent is important
- You’re looking for high moisture balm
- You want a high shine balm
