It’s been a long time since eye shadow primer was popular. Many beauty lovers use concealer as eye shadow primer or skip it all together. Plus, makeup brands continue to improve eyeshadow formulas, and often a primer isn’t needed. So did NYX Professional Makeup (known as NYX Cosmetics) bring back eyeshadow primer for makeup lovers?
The NYX Professional Makeup (or NYX Cosmetics) Ultimate Shadow & Liner Vegan Eye Primer ($10) is described as “vegan eye primer infused with Vitamin E & in 4 skin-adapting shades”. It has a “unique doe foot applicator [that] hugs eyelids for easy, gentle and smooth application”.
Its available in 4 shades: Light, Medium, Medium Deep, and Deep for $10 USD each.

NYX Professional Makeup Ultimate Shadow & Liner Primer Review
Eyeshadow primer was considered essential for ANY eyeshadow look.
But, it’s an additional step and cost in a makeup routine.
In recent years, beauty lovers ditched eye primer and used concealer on the eye or skipped eye primer all together.
The NYX Ultimate Shadow Primer looked interesting based on its advertising photos. The pictures show serious vibrancy with the primer!
Also, an eyeshadow primer that is sold in multiple shades and can be worn alone sounds awesome!
This eyeshadow primer wasn’t what I expected
Right away I was impressed with the easy to use doe foot applicator, but then things got weird.
The applicator works well, but blending the product in with a brush thinned out the product.
Using a finger concentrated the product better, but left patchiness.
I can even out the product, but the Ultimate Shadow Primer is not easy to blend at all.
This stuff is sticky!
The NYX Ultimate Shadow Primer has a tacky, sticky consistency which immediately made me think of beauties who pack on eyeshadow for maximum color pay off.
Generally beauties who do this are creating content for social media, are performing or otherwise wanting major payout from their shadows.
In this case, I think the NYX Shadow Primer maybe be a good option.
But, for anyone not looking to pack on multiple shades for a vivid look, this is just tacky and adds minimal effect.
Who would wear this alone?!
One of the major selling points for me was the option to wear the Ultimate Shadow Primer alone.
But, I found that the stickiness never went away and it was hard to blend. So I can’t wear the primer alone.
On the positive side however, the primer never creased, even after 8+ hours of wear.
Overall, the NYX Professional Makeup (or NYX Cosmetics) Ultimate Shadow & Liner Vegan Eye Primer is an okay product. You can find eyeshadow primers that work better (without the stickiness) for less than $10.
In fact, NYX also offers a very popular (often considered holy grail) Long Lasting Glitter Primer ($6.50) for under $10.
NYX Professional Makeup (NYX Cosmetics) is a really great brand, with tons of great products.
The Ultimate Eye Shadow Primer is not a must have, you CAN work with it, but there are better products out there.
You will like this product if:
- You create high vibrancy eye looks
- You’re looking for a tacky/sticky eye primer (best for packing on eye shadow)
You may not like this product if:
- The goal was to wear the primer alone (as described by NYX)
- You create blended everyday eyeshadow looks (ie. You don’t pack eye shadow on for vibrancy)
