Summer Makeup Tips: Sweat-Proof, Long Wearing Tips That Work!
- Try one tip or try them all!
In this post:
ToggleThe summer heat doesn’t mean you need to abandon your love of makeup!
Summer is the perfect time to embrace your skin and use lighter coverage products like bb cream or tinted moisturizer.
BUT you can wear a full face of makeup in the summer season too, and I’ll tell you how!
Here are some of my Best Summer Makeup Tips!
The secret weapon to keeping your makeup sweat-proof and long wearing during warmer weather months.
1. Simplify your skincare routine
The best way to keep your makeup from sweating off or rubbing off in the summer starts with skincare.
Try to simplify your skincare routine in hot weather.
You may not need multiple serums and a heavier moisturizer when its already warm outside.
Stick to the basics: cleanse, hydrate (this can be using a hydrating toner and/or a serum), and apply sunscreen.
Hydrating toners like and hyaluronic acid are my go-to lightweight products for summer.

2. Stay away from oil based moisturizers
Consider switching to a gel based moisturizer or lighter oil-free formula moisturizer, so your skin stays hydrated but doesn’t get oily throughout the day.

3. Prime your skin before makeup
One of the easiest ways to prep your skin for all day makeup wear is by using a makeup primer.
Primer has gotten a bad rap in recent years where beauty lovers see the product as useless.
But trust me, if you are outside living your best life this summer, primer is a must.
Apply a primer that specifically targets shine and/or a primer that specifically says “long wear”.
A good primer will create a barrier between your skin, and the makeup you want to last all day!

Extra Beauty Tip: Try using an eye makeup primer to prevent oily lids throughout the day.
4. Try the powder before foundation trick
Adding a thin layer of your loose setting powder BEFORE applying foundation can help oily and combination skin beauties ward off shine!
Add the setting powder all over your face, or target your most shiny areas like the high points of your face (nose, cheeks, forehead, etc.).
Powder before foundation is the easiest way to start your summer makeup routine, and make it last, without needing any new products!

5. Choose foundation over tinted moisturizer
I love tinted moisturizers!
But, If you want your makeup to last all day in the summer heat, consider wearing foundation over a tinted moisturizer (or BB cream).
Although tinted sunscreens and moisturizers are lightweight and easy to apply, they aren’t known for lasting powder.
If you prefer tinted face products, consider using tip #3 or #4 to give your makeup some lasting power!

6. Set your cream products
Cream products are having a moment in the beauty community.
A natural cream finish is flattering on all skin types and is easy to apply with brushes, sponges, or fingers.
Try setting your cream products with a translucent pressed powder.
Or choose a matching color powder (for cream blush, bronzer, etc.) to set your cream products, and increase the wear time of your makeup.

7. Setting spray is key
Setting spray formulas have come a long way in recent years.
You can find a formula that includes makeup setting + SPF coverage (to block the UV rays).
A good setting spray will keep your makeup in place all day long!
Setting spray is key if you want your makeup to last, especially for beauties who prefer not to wear a lot of powder products.

8. Use a sunscreen that won’t add shine
Sunscreen is an absolute must all year long, but even more during the summer months.
If your goal is to have your makeup last all day, use a sunscreen that is gel based that dries down (ie. doesnt stay glowy or dewy).
“No shine” or “matte” Sunscreens also help because your makeup wont get oily throughout the day and you can still ward off the UVB rays!
Of course if you love a glowy or dewy finish, skip this tip.
One (or more) of the other summer makeup tips will work for you!

9. Don’t wear foundation at all
You don’t HAVE TO to wear full-coverage foundation or a tinted moisturizer to get an even skin tone, no matter what time of year it is.
Humid weather is enough to deal with on its own!
Try using just a long wearing concealer and pressed powder (in a skin tone shade) instead of foundation to give your skin even coverage.

10. Wear waterproof where you can
Waterproof makeup products are great for summer, even if you’re not swimming.
Try using waterproof makeup products (like waterproof mascara) when you anticipate a humid day.
Waterproof formulas will keep your summer makeup look from running and last most (if not all) day!
