I Tested Skincare for Hyperpigmentation & Dark Spots: These Worked!

If you’re dealing with hyperpigmentation, dark spots, or uneven skin tone, I’ve got news for you.  There ARE skincare products that will help!  Over the years, I’ve tested everything from luxury serums to drugstore skincare for hyperpigmentation, and these are the products that actually made a visible difference in how my skin looks.

Think of this list like your even skin arsenal—you don’t need every single dark spot treatment, but choosing a few skincare products for hyperpigmentation that fit your routine and budget can really help lighten stubborn spots and prevent new ones from forming.

⚠️ Just a quick note: don’t overload your routine with too many hyperpigmentation treatments at once.  That can wreck your skin barrier. Instead, pick one or two products to start with and build from there.

Best Cleanser for Hyperpigmentation

The Urban Skin RX Even Tone Cleansing Bar is a three-in-one cleanser, mask, and exfoliator formulated with kojic acid, azelaic acid, and niacinamide. It helps brighten skin while gently cleansing and is a great entry point if you’re building a skincare routine for hyperpigmentation.

Cleanse your skin and leave it on for about a minute before rinsing to help even skin tone and fade dark spots over time. This product is so good that I bought a back up before I even finished the first one. LOVE it!

Best Exfoliating Toner for Hyperpigmentation

For exfoliating toners, the Urban Skin RX Clean and Even Clarifying Glycolic Pads work similarly to First Aid Beauty’s popular version, using glycolic and salicylic acid to smooth texture and fade post-acne marks.  If you prefer to spray your toner on to a cotton round, the CosRX AHA/BHA Toner is amazing for fading dark spots and getting that even, smooth skin as well.

Best Serum for Dark Spots

The Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution is a vitamin C–powered serum that helps fade newer marks and improve uneven skin tone. I’ve repurchased it multiple times because it works consistently and doesn’t add heaviness or extra shine to my skincare routine.

If you’re looking for a lightweight serum that fits easily into most skincare routines for hyperpigmentation, this one is the G.O.A.T (for my skin).

Best Affordable Dark Spot Treatment

If you’re just getting into treatments, the Cocokind Turmeric Tonic Spot Treatment is gentle but effective.  It uses turmeric and ginger instead of strong acids to help brighten dark spots while calming the skin.  The lightweight cream texture makes it easy to layer without irritation.

Best Drugstore Product for Hyperpigmentation

The Hero Cosmetics Lightning Wand is one of my holy grails. It’s a serum stick with niacinamide and tranexamic acid that you can roll directly onto dark spots—no need to change your entire skincare routine.  This is one of my favorite drugstore skincare products for hyperpigmentation because it’s targeted, affordable, and beginner-friendly.

Best Sunscreen for Dark Spots

Sunscreen is non-negotiable when treating hyperpigmentation. Without daily SPF, dark marks can become darker and harder to fade.  Two of my favorite sunscreens for protecting against dark spots are:

Both are lightweight, high-SPF formulas that work well for most skin types and layer nicely under makeup.

I also did a full YouTube video breaking down the best sunscreens by skin type after testing 100 different sunscreenswatch the video here.

Best At-Home Peel for Hyperpigmentation

The L’Oréal Bright Reveal Dark Spot Peel is a drugstore gem formulated with glycolic acid and tranexamic acid.  It works like a gentle at-home peel and helps smooth texture while improving uneven skin tone over time.  Its definitely tingly, so it may not work for skincare newbies but boy does it give you gorgeous skin!

Best Acne Patches for Preventing Dark Spots

The Mario Badescu Drying Patches go beyond basic hydrocolloid dots that only protect a breakout.  These include salicylic acid and niacinamide to help shrink breakouts and reduce the likelihood of post-acne dark spots.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve repurchased these—I keep at least two boxes on hand at all times!
